1. Au commencement, Dieu créa
Les cieux et la terre.
La terre était informe et vide’: Il y avait
Des ténèbres à la surface’
de l’abîme, et l’Esprit
Du Seigneur se mouvait au-dessus des eaux.
Dieu dit: Que la lumièr’ soit!
Et la lumière fut.
Il nomma la lumièr’, jour; les
ténèbres’, nuit.
Dieu vit que cela était bon.
Et il y eut un soir,
Et puis un matin. Ce fut le premier jour.
2. Dieu dit: Qu’il y ait une étendue
Entre les eaux, et qu’elle
Sépare’ les eaux d’avec les eaux. Et
Dieu fit
L’étendue, et sépara les eaux qui sont
au-dessous
De l’étendue d’avec les eaux qui sont au-
Dessus de l’étendue. Et
Cela fut ainsi. Et
L’Éternel Dieu appela
l’étendue ciel.
Dieu vit que cela était bon.
Et il y eut un soir,
Et puis un matin. Ce fut le second jour.
3. Dieu dit: Que les eaux qui sont au-
Dessous du ciel s’amassent
En un seul endroit, et que le sec paraisse.
Dieu appela Terre le sec, et Mers l’amas des eaux.
Puis Dieu dit: Que la terr’ se couvre’ de verdure,
Et ce fut ainsi. La terre
Produisit la verdure,
De l’herbe et des arbres produisant du fruit,
Dieu vit que cela était bon.
Et il y eut un soir,
Et puis un matin. Ce fut le troisièm’ jour.
4. Dieu dit: Qu’il y ait des luminaires
Dans l’étendue du ciel,
Pour séparer le jour d’avec la nuit; et
Que ce soient des signes’ pour marquer
Époques’, jours et années;
Qu’ils servent de luminaires dans le ciel,
Pour illuminer la terr’. Cela fut fait ainsi.
Dieu fit deux grands luminaires’ et les étoiles.
Dieu vit que cela était bon.
Et il y eut un soir,
Et puis un matin. Ce fut le quatrièm’ jour.
5. Dieu dit: Que les eaux produisent
Des animaux vivants,
Que des oiseaux vol’nt sur la terr’ vers le ciel.
Dieu créa les grands poissons et tous les êtres
vivants
Qui nagent; Dieu créa aussi les oiseaux.
Et Dieu les bénit, disant:
Croissez et multipliez,
Et remplissez la terre et les eaux des mers.
Dieu vit que cela était bon.
Et il y eut un soir,
Et puis un matin. Ce fut le cinquièm' jour.
6. Dieu dit: Que la terr’ produise
Des animaux vivants
Selon leur espèce’, du bétail, des
reptiles
Et des animaux terrestres, et cela fut ainsi.
L’Éternel dit: Faisons l’homme
à Notre image.
Dieu créa l’homme et la femme,
Les bénit, et leur dit:
Remplissez la terre, et l’assujettissez…
Voici cela était très bon.
Et il y eut un soir,
Et puis un matin. Ce fut le sixièm' jour.
7. Ainsi fur’nt achevés les cieux
Et la terre, et toute
Leur armée. Dieu acheva au septièm’ jour
Son œuvre, qu'Il avait faite:
Et Il se reposa
Au septièm’ jour de tout ce qu’Il avait
fait.
Dieu bénit le septième jour, et Il le sanctifia,
Il en fit un jour qui Lui est réservé…
Au septième jour
l’Éternel
Se reposa de toute
L’œuvre qu'Il avait créée en
la faisant.
8. L’Éternel seul a fait les cieux
Et la terre par Sa
Grande puissance et par Son bras étendu.
C’est Lui seul qui donne la vie à chaque
créature.
Et l’armée des cieux se prostern’ devant
Lui.
Bénissez l’Éternel Dieu,
Pour toute’ l’éternité.
Louez Dieu dont la gloire’ surpass’
toute’ louange.
Il est digne de recevoir
La gloire et la puissance,
Et l’honneur; car Il a créé toutes
choses.

1. In the beginning the Lord God
Created the heavens
And the earth. Now the earth was waste and empty,
Darkness was over the surface of the deep, the Spirit
Of God was hovering over the waters.
And God said, "Let there be light,"
And there was light. The Lord
Called the light, day, and the darkness He called, night.
The Lord God saw that it was good.
And there was evening
And there was morning, and it was the first day.
2. Then the Lord God said: Let there be
An expanse in the midst
Of the waters, let it be a division
Between waters and waters. Thus
The Lord made the expanse
And divided the waters that are under
The expanse from the waters that’re above the expanse;
And it was so. God called the expanse heavens.
The Lord God saw that it was good.
And there was evening
And there was morning, it was the second day.
3. God said: Let the water under the sky be gathered to
One place, and let dry ground appear. It was so.
God called the dry ground Earth, and called
The gathered waters Seas.
Then God said, let the earth cause grass to spring up…
And it was so. The earth brought
Forth grass, and trees yielding
Fruit with seed in it according to their kinds.
The Lord God saw that it was good.
And there was evening
And there was morning, and it was the third day.
4. And God said: Let there be lights in
The expanse of the sky
To divide the day from the night, and let them
Be for signs, and seasons, and for
Days and years; and let them
Be for lights in the expanse of the heavens,
To give light on the earth. And it was so. And God made
The two great lights. And He also made the stars.
The Lord God saw that it was good.
And there was evening
And there was morning, and it was the fourth day.
5. And God said: Let the water teem
With living creatures,
Let birds fly above the earth in the expanse
Of the sky. So God created the great sea creatures
And ev’ry living and moving thing with which
The water teems, and ev'ry winged bird after its kind.
God blessed them and said,
"Be fruitful 'n multiply…"
The Lord God saw that it was good.
And there was evening
And there was morning, and it was the fifth day.
6. And God said: Let the earth bring forth
Living souls according
To their kind: Cattle, and creeping thing, and beast.
Then God said: Let’s make man in Our
Image, in Our likeness…
Male and female the Lord God created them.
God blessed them, and said to them: Be fruitful ’n multiply;
Fill the earth, subdue it. And rule over all.
God saw that it was very good.
And there was evening
And there was morning, and it was the sixth day.
7. Thus the heavens and the earth and
All their host were finished.
And on the seventh day God ended His work
Which He had made; and He rested
On the seventh day from
All His work which He had made. And God blessed the
Seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He
Had rested from all the work of creating…
God made the seventh day holy,
Because in it He took
His rest from all the work which He’d made and done.
8. The Lord alone has made heaven,
And He has made the earth
By His great power and by His outstretched arm.
He’s the only One who gives life to every creature,
And the multitudes of heaven worship Him.
Bless the Lord God Almighty
Forever and ever.
His glory is above all blessing and praise.
The Lord is worthy to receive
Glory, honor and power;
Because by Him every thing was created.
