1. Le roi Assuérus nomma Haman,
Premier ministre et l’éleva
De telle sorte qu’à son passage
Il fallait s’agenouiller devant lui.
2. Mais Mardochée ne s’inclinait point,
Les servants du roi lui disaient:
Pourquoi transgresses’-tu l'ordre du roi?
Mais Mardochée ne les écoutait pas.
3. Quand Haman vit que Mardochée ne
Se prosternait pas devant lui,
Il fut rempli de fureur. Aussi,
Il apprit que Mardochée était Juif…
4. Il jugea trop insuffisant de
Se venger de Mardochée seul.
Il résolut donc d'exterminer
Tous les Juifs qui vivaient dans le royaume.
5. Alors Haman dit à Assuérus:
Il y a dans toutes les provinces
De ton royaume un peuple à part et
Aux lois différentes des autres peuples.
6. Ils n'observent point les lois du roi.
Il est dans l’intérêt du roi
De les faire’ périr et si le roi
Le trouve bon qu’on écrive cet ordre.
7. Quand Mardochée apprit tout ce qui
S’était passé, il déchira
Ses vêtements et s'enveloppa
D'un sac et il se couvrit de cendre.
8. C’est ainsi qu’il parcourut la ville,
Poussant de grands cris de douleur.
Les Juifs furent en grand deuil, jeûnant,
Et pleurant: C’était la désolation!
9. Esther fut informée de cela,
Et elle fut très effrayée,
Et s’enquit auprès de Mardochée
Qui lui raconta tout dans les détails.
10. Il ordonna qu'Esther se rendît
Chez le roi pour lui demander
Grâce et l'implorer en faveur de
Son peuple. Mais il existe une loi…
11. Portant peine de mort contre qui
Entre chez le roi sans être
Appelé. Celui-là a la vie
Sauve à qui le roi tend le sceptre d’or.
12. Et l’on rendit compte à Mardochée
Qui lui fit dir’: Ne t’imagine
Pas que tu pourras échapper seule
D’entre tous les Juifs parce’ que tu es reine.
13. Car, si toi tu te tais maintenant,
Le secours et la délivrance
Surgiront d'autre part pour les Juifs,
Mais ta famille et toi, vous périrez.
14. Et qui sait si ce n'est pas pour un
Temps comme celui-ci que tu
Es parvenue à la royauté?
Esther demanda donc à Mardochée:
15. Va, rassemble tous les Juifs, jeûnez
Pour moi, pendant trois jours, trois nuits.
Mes servantes’ et moi nous jeûnerons.
Puis j’irai chez le roi, malgré la loi;
16. Si je dois périr, je périrai.
Au bout du troisièm’ jour, Esther
Se rendit chez le roi et trouva
Grâce à ses yeux: Il lui tendit le sceptre.
17. En réponse au roi, ell’ l’invita
À un festin avec Haman.
Ce qui fut fait. Mais la reine Esther
Promit de répondre le lendemain.
18. Haman sortit ce jour-là, joyeux;
Mais quand il vit que Mardochée
Ne se levait pas devant lui, il
Fut rempli de colère contre lui.
19. Il parla aux siens de ses richesses,
Et de son prestige à la cour:
Mais il ne serait jamais en paix
Aussi longtemps que Mardochée vivrait.
20. "Fais donc pendre Mardochée, le Juif".
Il fit préparer la potence.
Cette nuit-là, le roi ne put pas
Dormir, et se fit lire les chroniques.
21. Il trouva écrit que Mardochée
Avait sauvé la vie du roi
En révélant la conspiration
De deux eunuques, gardes d’Assuérus.
22. Et le roi demanda quels honneurs
Mardochée a eus pour cela.
Il n'avait reçu aucun honneur.
Le roi voulut réparer cet oubli.
23. Alors il dit: Qui est dans la cour?
Justement Haman entrait dans
La cour extérieure, demander
Au roi de faire pendre Mardochée…
24. Haman entra, et le roi lui dit:
Que faut-il faire pour un homme
Que le roi veut honorer? Haman
Se dit en son cœur: Quel autre que moi…
25. Haman dit au roi: Pour un homme que
Le roi veut honorer, qu’on prenne
Le vêtement royal dont le roi
Se couvre et le cheval que le roi monte…
26. Comme tu l'as dit, fais ainsi pour
Mardochée, ne néglige rien
De tout ce que tu as mentionné.
Haman revêtit ainsi Mardochée.
27. Il le promena criant devant
Lui: C’est ainsi qu’on fait à
l’homme
Que le roi veut honorer! Haman
Retourna chez lui, vraiment affligé.
28. Sa femme et ses amis dir’nt alors:
Si ce Mardochée devant qui
Tu commences de tomber est Juif,
Sûrement, tu tomberas devant lui.
29. Puis il alla au festin d’Esther.
Esther fit au roi cett’ réponse:
Donne-moi la vie, sauve mon peuple,
Nous sommes’ vendus pour être
exterminés.
30. L’oppresseur, c’est Haman le
méchant!
Il fut saisi de terreur en
Présence du roi et de la reine.
Le roi laissa éclater sa fureur.
31. Haman fut pendu au bois dressé
Pour Mardochée. Le roi ôta
Alors du doigt l’anneau repris à
Haman, et le donna à Mardochée;
32. Esther, l’établit sur la maison
D'Haman. Ell’ supplia le roi
De s’opposer aux plans malfaisants
Qu’Haman avait conçus contre les Juifs.
33. Mardochée sortit de chez le roi,
Avec un vêtement royal
Une grande couronne d'or, et
Un manteau de fin lin et d’écarlate.
34. La ville de Suse poussait des
Cris de joie et se réjouissait.
Pour les Juifs, ce fut un grand jour de
Bonheur et joie, d’allégresse et de gloire.
35. Il y eut des festins et des fêtes.
Et beaucoup de gens d'entre les
Peuples du pays se firent Juifs,
Tant les Juifs leur inspiraient de la crainte.
Mes yeux ont vu le secours de Dieu.
Quand j’ai prié mes yeux ont vu,
Mes yeux ont vu le secours de Dieu.

1. King Ahasuerus honored Haman,
And advanced him and set his seat
Above all the nobles. All the king’s
Servants knelt down and paid homage to him.
2. But Mordecai would not bow or pay
Homage. The king’s servants asked him,
"Why do you transgress the king’s command?"
And Mordecai would not listen to them.
3. He had told them that he was a Jew.
When Haman saw that Mordecai
Would not kneel down or pay him homage,
He was enraged, and wanted to kill him.
4. But Haman disdained to lay hands on
Mordecai alone. Instead, he
Sought to destroy all the Jews who were
In all the kingdom of Ahasuerus.
5. Then Haman said to King Xerxes, there
Is a certain people in all
The provinces of your kingdom whose
Laws are different from all other people’s.
6. They don’t obey the king's laws; it’s not
In the king's best interest to let
Them remain. If it pleases the king,
Let it be decreed that they be destroyed.
7. When Mordecai learned of all that had
Been done, he tore his clothes, put on
Sackcloth and ashes, went out into
The city, wailing loudly ’n bitterly.
8. There was great mourning among the Jews,
With fasting, weeping and wailing.
Many lay in sackcloth and ashes,
In every province where the decree came.
9. When Esther heard about Mordecai,
She was in great distress. She sent
Hathach to learn what this was and why,
Mordecai told her all that had happened.
10. He charged her to go in to the king
To make supplication to him,
And plead before him for her people.
But she let him know that there is a law:
11. If anyone approaches the king
Without being sent for, he is to
Be put to death; only those to whom
The king’s rod of gold is stretched out may live.
12. So they told Mordecai Esther’s words.
And he told them to answer her:
"Don’t think in your heart that you’ll escape
In the king’s palace, more than all the Jews…
13. For if you keep silent at this time,
Help and salvation for the Jews
Will come from another place, but you
And your father's family will perish.
14. Yet who knows whether you’ve come to the
Kingdom for such a time as this?"
She sent this reply to Mordecai:
"Go and gather together all the Jews…
15. And fast for me; neither eat nor drink
For three days, night or day. My maids
And I will fast likewise. And so I’ll
Go to the king, which is against the law;
16. And if I perish, I perish." Now
On the third day Esther went to
The king. When he saw her he was pleased
With her and held out to her the sceptre.
17. She invited the king and Haman,
To the banquet she had prepared.
And at the feast, Esther promised to
Answer the king’s question the day after.
18. So Haman went out that day joyful;
But when he saw Mordecai who
Did not stand or tremble before him,
He was filled with rage against Mordecai.
19. Haman boasted about his vast wealth,
And everything in which the king
Had honoured him. "Yet all this avails
Me nothing, so long as I see this Jew."
20. "Ask the king to have Mordecai hanged."
So Haman had the gallows made.
That night the king could not sleep; so he
Ordered the chronicles be read to him.
21. It was found written that Mordecai
Had exposed two of the eunuchs,
Who guarded the doorway and who had
Conspired to assassinate the king.
22. "What honor or dignity has been
Bestowed on Mordecai for this?"
"Nothing has been done for Mordecai,"
And then the king said, "Who is in the court?"
23. Now Haman had just entered the court
Of the palace to speak to the
King about hanging Mordecai on
The gallows he had erected for him.
24. When Haman entered, the king asked him,
What should be done for the man whom
The king delights to honor?" And now
He thought in his heart: "Whom, more than myself…"
25. So he answered: For the man the king
Delights to honour, have them bring
A royal robe which the king has worn
And a horse on which the king has ridden…
26. "Hurry, and do just as you have said
For Mordecai. Do not neglect
Anything you’ve recommended." So
He robed Mordecai, led him on horseback…
27. Through the city square, Haman proclaimed:
"Thus shall it be done to the man
Whom the king delights to honour!" Then
He rushed home, with his head covered in grief.
28. His wise men and his wife said to him,
"If Mordecai, before whom you’ve
Begun to fall, is a Jew, you can’t
Stand against him, you’ll surely come to ruin!"
29. So the king and Haman went to dine
With queen Esther. Then she answered:
Grant me my life, and spare my people,
For we’ve been sold for annihilation.
30. "The enemy is this vile Haman."
Then he was terrified before
The king and queen. The king got up in
A rage. He left his wine and he went out.
31. So they hanged Haman on the gallows
He had prepared for Mordecai.
The king presented to Mordecai,
His signet ring he’d reclaimed from Haman.
32. And Esther appointed him over
Haman's estate. She spoke again
To the king and she begged him to put
An end to the evil plan of Haman.
33. So Mordecai left the king's presence
Wearing royal garments of blue
And white, with a large crown of gold and
A garment of fine linen and purple.
34. And the city of Shushan rejoiced
And was glad. The Jews had light and
Gladness, joy and honor wherever
The command and decree of the king came.
35. The Jews had joy and gladness, a feast
And a holiday. Many of
The people of the land became Jews,
Because fear of the Jews fell upon them.
My eyes have seen the help of the Lord.
When I prayed my eyes truly saw,
